iPhone users raise network hopes

Matthew Key, who becomes chief executive of O2 Europe next month, told the Financial Times that 60 per cent of the company's iPhone customers in the UK were sending or receiving more than 25 megabytes of data a month, the equivalent of 7,500 e-mails without attachments or 25 YouTube videos.

By comparison, less than 2 per cent of O2's other UK customers on monthly payment contracts use more than 25MB a month.

"Here's absolute proof that if you get the proposition right, customers will use data," said Mr Key, who reached a deal with Apple for O2 to be the exclusive UK network operator for the iPhone.

It turns out that the officially (Apple-sanctioned) unlocked iPhone you bought for 649 Euros (about US$965) from Orange in France — which, according to some reports, accounts for up to 20% of total iPhone sales in France — is not really unlocked. It retains a country lock, meaning the device will only allow use of SIM cards for carriers that operate in France. In other words, you can’t take your French, “unlocked” iPhone to Spain, the United States, or anywhere else, pop in a foreign SIM card, and make calls on a local carrier — you’re still stuck paying international roaming fees to your French carrier.

CNBC jumps on Mac ultraportable bandwagon

We're a little more than a month away from the Macworld Expo, and the expectations are starting to get a little clearer for arguably Apple's biggest show of the year.

The ultraportable Mac is said to be 50 percent thinner and lighter than a current MacBook Pro, the largest notebook in Apple's lineup. And CNBC is also saying it expects the price to be about $1,500, the same price as the 13.3-inch black MacBook that's currently available on Apple's site.

Apple To Debut 3G iPhone By Mid-2008 -CNBC

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) new 3G iPhone is set to hit store shelves by late May or early June 2008, CNBC reported Thursday, citing a source close to Asian manufactures that are working with Apple.

The iPod Touch is also selling better than expected during the holiday season. A factory working with Apple is increasing production of the iPod Touch for the current quarter to 5.1 million units, the network reported.

Apple will also unveil a new sub-portable MacBook Pro at MacWorld in January. The ultra-portable laptop is expected to be 50% thinner than the existing MacBook, and will contain flash-based memory instead of a disc drive.

Shares of Apple were up 2% to $189.12 in recent trading.

Wal-Mart’s $200 PC - sold out

About two weeks ago, Wal-Mart began selling $200 Linux-based PC. The initial run was around 10,000 units. Now Wal-Mart is sold out. Has Linux now found a niche?

The system sold by Wal-Mart was an Everex’s TC2502 gPC and is the first mass-market $200 desktop PC. The spec of the system is very low - 1.5 GHz VIA C7 CPU embedded onto a Mini-ITX motherboard, 512MB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive - but this doesn’t matter because the system does pretty much everything that your average PC users wants. With the gPC you can surf the web, send and receive email, work with word processor and spreadsheet documents, chat with friends, keep a blog updated, edit photos and pictures, even burn DVDs thanks to the built-in DVD burner. About the only thing that your average home user won’t be able to do with this PC is play games on it.

If you’re a computer company, what on earth do you add to the sixth annual version of your operating system?

It’s not as though there are any glaring holes left. Nobody is still crying out for a better way to organize photos.

That’s the challenge that Apple faced in developing Mac OS X 10.5, code-named Leopard, which goes on sale tomorrow after a four-month delay. Price: $110 online, $190 for a family pack, or free on a new Mac. As Steve Jobs points out, for that money, “everyone gets the Ultimate version.” (That’s a swipe at Microsoft, which sells Windows Vista in at least five versions costing as much as $330 for the Ultimate).

More to Mac sales than a halo

It's very easy to take a look at Apple's stellar fourth quarter and conclude that the long-awaited iPod "halo effect" is in full swing and move onto something more pressing, like handicapping the World Series.

For years as the iPod took over the digital music player market, we all wondered whether it was a one-hit wonder, whether Apple could translate that success into increased Mac market share. Millions of people who might not have used an Apple product since they spent the third grade playing Oregon Trail on an Apple II were re-introduced to Apple through the iPod, and for the last year or so, they would appear to be trying the other things on the menu.

Apple Market Value Soars Past Dell's on Mac, IPod

Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Ten years ago this month, Dell Inc. founder Michael Dell said Steve Jobs should ```shut down'' Apple Inc. and return the money to shareholders.

Dell then had a market value of $4 billion to Apple's $700 million. Apple's valuation has since soared to $150 billion, more than double that of its personal-computer rival. Last month, Apple passed PC leader Hewlett-Packard Co. in market capitalization for the first time.

Jobs changed Apple from a company dependent on the Macintosh computer to a consumer-electronics innovator. He introduced the iPod media player, and built sales to more than 110 million units by updating features. This year Apple entered the wireless-handset market, drawing more than 1 million customers to the iPhone at an initial price of as much as $599.

Nokia, the largest maker of cellphones, said yesterday that its profit surged 85 percent in the third quarter as strong demand for low-cost phones in Africa, the Middle East and Asia lifted its share of the market to 39 percent.

Market share rose from 36 percent in the previous quarter as consumers in all regions except North and South America bought increasing numbers of entry-level phones costing less than 30 euros ($43). Increased demand outside the United States more than offset slight declines in the Americas.

Apple lowers price of DRM-free songs

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Apple Inc. is lowering the prices of songs it sells online without copy-protection to 99 cents from $1.29, a company spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The reduction, which started appearing on songs Tuesday, puts Apple closer in line with rival offerings. Amazon.com Inc., which opened its online music store in September, sells tracks without anti-copying software locks for 89 cents to 99 cents.

BANGALORE (Reuters) - Wireless technology firm InterDigital Inc (IDCC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said it signed a seven-year licensing agreement to provide technology for Apple Inc's (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) first cell phone, the iPhone.

According to a regulatory filing, InterDigital's license agreement with Apple covers the current iPhone and certain future mobile phones, if any.

"The deal covers various 2G and 3G cellular technologies encompassing bandwidth allocation, roaming and power efficiency controls, and most likely also includes some type of packet data coding and delivery," Ciarmoli said.

HD radio iTunes tagging

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Apple Inc., iBiquity Digital Corp, a developer of high-definition radio technology, and major radio companies said on Friday they are offering a new, free service called "iTunes Tagging."

The service lets listeners with HD Radio receivers containing a special tag button, to "tag" songs they hear on the FM dial for subsequent purchase via Apple's iTunes.

"iTunes tagging takes music discovery on the radio to the next level," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of iPod Product Marketing, in a statement.

Skype Comes to the iPhone

Shape Services has announced its IM+ Skype service for the iPhone, no hacking needed. The service is web based, to get around the iPhone's lack of third-party application suppoert, but otherwise works just like regular client. Chat is available, as are Skype to Skype calls, and you can call regular phones if you have a SkypeOut account.

There is a catch, though. Unlike PC based calls, you'll need to pay even if calling another Skype user: IM+ places the free VoIP call as usual, but then calls you back on your iPhone at SkypeOut rates. Still, if you are making calls abroad, it'll be a lot cheaper, and the service is free while in beta testing.

Future Apple iPods, iPhones may talk to each other

A future generation of iPod and iPhone portable media devices from Apple Inc. may use wireless technology to receive automated software updates and interact with other iPods and iPhones located within the same general vicinity, a recent patent request has revealed.

The September 1, 2006 filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office describes methods "for delivery of data to a portable electronic device from another electronic device" over a local wireless network -- a technique eerily similar to one introduced by Microsoft with its Zune media player last November. "In one embodiment, one mobile device discovers another mobile device within its vicinity. The mobile devices can then wirelessly transmit data from one mobile device to the other," Apple wrote in the filing. "Typically, the mobile devices are associated with persons (users). The mobile devices, or their users, can control, request or influence the particular data content being delivered."

I had a lot of crazy fun making my video “iPhone: The Musical” last week–and a lot of fun watching the reaction online.

Most people found it funny, out-there, or at least entertaining (agreed). Many accused me of not being the greatest singer in the world and being a ham (agreed). And a few people were appalled. (One blogger, evidently born without the satire gene, called it “an entertainment bit that belongs on a comedy show, not from the New York Times” and that it “devalues the Times as a news outlet.” Wow—the New York Times criticized for having a sense of humor? Isn’t it usually just the opposite?)

Anyway, with the flood of feedback came a torrent of questions, and there were some interesting tech challenges along the way. So here’s my “making of” story, as driven by reader questions.

Apple patent applications hint at Wi-Fi iPods, new mice

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has revealed a raft of new patent applications submitted by Apple's lawyers, covering new technologies for iPods, Web pages and mice.

Macsimum News spotted several patent applications that were filed months ago but just revealed this week on the PTO's Web site. The most intriguing example appears to involve a method for allowing an iPod or iPhone to talk to a neighboring device through a wireless network. The application assumes that mobile devices already are capable of downloading data from the Internet over cellular or Wi-Fi networks, "however, as portable electronic devices become more versatile and more interactive, it is advantageous to exchange (send and/or receive) media or other types of data with other electronic devices in a wireless manner."

A complex remote-control work around has achieved what every geek wants: running Skype on an iPhone.

While some are working to unlock the iPhone, to use on other networks, others are working to give its users cheap calls using the popular Skype VOIP software.

The breakthrough comes from Tom Keating of TMC Labs, and is likely to be more of a proof of concept, as it uses a complex remote control application, and doesn't actually deliver free calls, though they may be cheaper.
